Who is your role model?
Role models are a key part of the student journey, be it as looking up to inspirational individuals in the media, day to day people you encounter around you or someone as fantastic as your peers. They are not those you simply look up to, but those you are also inspired by.
We may have role models whom we admire for their persistence, confidence, success or character, to name the few. There isn't a set characteristic or quality that defines or restricts an individual from making someone their role model. However, can you count how many female role models in the field of mathematics do you have today?
Answer : not enough.
The problem isn't that there aren't women that take Mathematical studies at a degree level, but rather growing from this into a career field following this route. Then, not being recognised to celebrate their journeys and inspiring others.
I want to provide a platform to allow every diamond the opportunity to shine. For the young girls exploring this field to find new role models in their community, discover and celebrate their journeys with them.
"How important it is to celebrate our heros and she-roes!" - Maya Angelou
Working together, we can appreciate these faces and share the love of mathematics together. If you would like to share your story or know of an inspirational role model in the field of mathematics, contact us to nominate them and give them the opportunity to share their story today.
It is important to recognise, understand and appreciate women in mathematics, and we can only achieve this by working together. I look forward to reading your stories soon!
